Branch of electronics concerned with the
development of devices (based on the
semiconductor gallium arsenide) that respond
not only to the electrons of electronic data
transmission, but also to photons. In 1989,
scientists at IBM in the USA built a gallium
arsenide microprocessor (`chip') containing
8,000 transistors and four photodetectors.
The densest optoelectronic chip yet produced,
this can detect and process data at a speed
of 1 billion bits per second.
